Snarkitecture is a collaborative practice operating in territories between the disciplines of art and architecture. Working within existing spaces or in collaboration with other artists and designers, the practice focuses on the investigation of structure, material and program and how these elements can be manipulated to serve new and imaginative purposes. Searching for sites within architecture with the possibility for confusion or misuse, Snarkitecture aims to make architecture perform the unexpected. Snarkitecture was established by Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham.
DM/ If your studio were a person, how would you describe him/her?
SNARK/ The Bellman from Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark is our imaginary guide into the unknown.
DM/ What is your favorite tool in the studio?
SNARK/ A custom hot wire cutter that we use to carve EPS foam.
DM/ Empty your pockets/bag.
Alex: I prefer to not carry a lot of things. The keychain is the very first object I bought when I moved to New York in 2000, and I still use it everyday.
Daniel: I like French candy, I travel a lot, and I use my phone a lot. The trays holding the contents of our pockets are a new series of objects by Snarkitecture called Pillow. They are designed to provide dedicated resting places for items typically carried in your pockets or bag. The phone version is available at shop.snarkitecture.com
DM/ What was the first thing you designed in your studio?
SNARK/ This photo by our friend Noah Kalina shows two of the very first things we designed and built for our studio. One is the full height shelving made from burnt wood and the other is Slab Table, a conference and ping pong table.
DM/ What are you listening to?
SNARK/ Yeezy season approaching, but there’s a lot of other great music we’re listening to in the studio… Click here to open Snarkitecture’s Spotify playlist for Design Log.
DM/ Show us your pets!
SNARK/ This is Oliver.
